IoT-Based Field Worker Monitoring System

The Field Worker Monitoring System (FWMS) is an integrated digital platform designed to help companies monitor, manage, and analyze field worker activities in real-time through a combination of interactive maps and data from wearable IoT devices. This system addresses operational needs in large-scale work environments such as plantations, mining areas, and infrastructure projects—where manual supervision is no longer efficient and may miss critical incidents in the field.

FWMS connects three main components: wearable IoT devices on the field side, automatic detection and alert machines on the system side, and a web-based management dashboard on the user side—forming a fully connected monitoring ecosystem.

The Challenge

The Challenge

Problems to Be Solved
Supervising field workers over large areas presents a series of interconnected challenges—from limited visibility to unpredictable safety risks.

  1. No real-time visibility: Supervisors cannot know workers’ positions and status directly without manual communication.

  2. Undetected safety risks: Incidents such as workers leaving safe zones or fatigue conditions cannot be detected automatically.

  3. Inaccurate attendance validation: Conventional attendance systems cannot verify if workers are actually at the designated work location.

  4. Manual productivity reporting: Field activity reporting still relies on manual recording, which is prone to inconsistencies and data manipulation.

  5. Inefficient organizational management: There is no centralized system to manage team structures, work areas, and hierarchical worker assignments.

  6. No location-based analytics: GPS data from the field is not processed into productivity insights usable for decision-making.

Project Objective

Project Objective

FWMS is built with seven main objectives covering operational, safety, and company analytics needs.

  • Provides a real-time dashboard displaying the location and activity status of all workers on an interactive map.

  • Integrates data from wearable IoT devices—including GPS trackers and smartwatches—as the system’s primary data source.

  • Detects and sends automatic alerts for critical operational conditions: geofence violations, device removal during work hours, low battery, and excessive work duration in one area.

  • Provides attendance reports based on actual GPS data as a replacement for manual attendance systems.

  • Generates location-based productivity reports that management can use for field performance evaluation.

  • Offers an administration module for managing organizational structure, worker assignments, and work zone (geofence) configurations.

  • Improves field supervision efficiency and reduces reliance on manual validation mechanisms.

Through the project execution process I usually follow these main stages:

  1. Discover: Deep dive into your goals, users, and business context. Understanding comes before designing.

  2. Define: Structure the problem, map user flows, and create wireframes that set a solid foundation.

  3. Design: High-fidelity visuals, interactive prototypes, and a design system that scales with your product.

  4. Deliver: Clean handoff with specs, assets, and documentation — so your dev team can build without guessing.

Here are some design results aligned with the project's objectives.

1. Dashboard Monitoring

1. Dashboard Monitoring

Real-time dashboard displaying the location and activity status of all workers on an interactive map.

2. Location Structure Management

2. Location Structure Management

Enables companies to create areas in blank map for workers based on their specific areas and tasks.

3. Employee Management

3. Employee Management

Comprehensive organizational management encompassing companies, foremans, employees, device integration, and scheduling. This system effectively supports hierarchical management of team structures, work zones, and employee assignments.

4. Schedule Management

4. Schedule Management

Coordinate assignments among foremen, employees, and work areas based on the established schedule.

5. Geofence Alert & Activity Log

5. Geofence Alert & Activity Log

Generate location-based productivity reports that management can use to evaluate field performance, helping to improve field supervision efficiency and reduce reliance on manual validation mechanisms.
